Different views on power

Although Steve Jobs become one of the most powerful people in business, he does not think in term of power. He thinks about creating new innovative products that will surprise and delight customers. Happy and loyal customers are what give Apple its ‘power.’ Apple is one of the successful companies. He simply tries to make great products that he want for himself, and hope that customers will love them as much as he does. His goal is to work on both the business side and the creative side.

Although Zhang Yin started out from a modest background, the daughter of a military officer, she is now a businessperson and richer than virtually any other woman anywhere in the world, including Oprah Winfrey, Martha Stewart, and the chief executive of eBay, Meg Whitman. Her personal wealth is estimated at $1.5 billion or more. Her company, Nine Dragons Paper, is now the biggest paper maker in China and one of the successful paper companies. Her goal is to make Nine Dragons, in three to five years, the international leader in containerboards. Therefore, she was tough and had figured out how to get the best performance out of those who worked for her.

My understand

For Steve Jobs, his power is to change the world – evolution.
For Zhang Yin, her power is being the first paper factory in the world – aggressive development.

THE ELEVATORS AND DINING TABLE

Elevator for Steve Jobs: I used simple design skills- add and subtract for his elvator because of his simple design on his product.

Elevator for Zhang Yin: I designed it like the two hands which means there is like having an invisiable hand to push Zhang Yin to develop and be successful. Because her office is designed below, the hand can be "push up."

Dinnering table: This dinner table is designed in composing by four identical parts without any nails and screws to connect. What concept I want to express is that even how power for Jobs and Zhang, they are still only parts of the world. They are necessary to cooperate with other people in order to access success. In addition, the four parts are identical mean everyone is the same basically. They have the same opportunity to access power or become powerful people.

THE IMAGE CAPTURES AND ARCHITECTURE

Overall view of the whole buildings:

The buildings are composed by three parts, the uuper office is desinged for Steve Jobs, then the yellow one is the meeting place and the lower office is designed for Zhang Yin. The reason for why the Jobs's office is desinged in horizontal to the meeting place is the orignial brifge is set too high. In addition, I think the bridge is a trap for designing the building because the bridge is too large that can be seperated in four floors. Therefore, I decided to cut the bridge before making the the model.

Jobs's office:

For Steve Jobs, his power is a type of power that can be a revolution in the world. He is not willing to follow the traditional way on design and even wants to escape from the traditional thinking. Therefore, I designed a glass made facade which means the traditonal thinking while designed to make the "sloped" rectangular polycon which means the willing of Jobs. These two thngs composed a strong powerful movement to express the "Steve Jobs is escapaing from traditional thinking."

For the front side of the building, as it is "sloped", it is not easy to access the sunlight. Therefore, I make use the ground open space to let the sunlight to pass through from the opposite side to the internal space, then passing through the small windows of the "dark" side. This design can make the small windows seem to luminate themselves.

At the back side of the building, there are many small boxes which means the the influence of Jobs's power and also enhance the "falling" and movement feelings

The top floor is a like an intersection point that allow different ways for people, so it is spacious. The left hand side is two internal elevators, up and down. the middle one is the bridge to access the meeting place. The right hand side's stair is to access Jobs's office.

The floor for Steve is like the "half-floor" that it can only be access from the top floor which can keep his privacy while he can notice what happen to the below floor. Moreover, as his work is related to creativity, I avoid to design the internal in compact. Therefore, the whole internal area is spacious.

At the floor below Jobs's floor, there is still a stair the access the ground floor of the building. In the middle of the ground floor, there is a place like bacony for viewing.

At the ground floor, there are some nets for ventilation and sun light. It also is an important for the visual effect of "Falling." As the thin nets seem to break any time.

For the bridge to access the meeting place, I chose the white transparent glass which looks like a beam of light from the the dark building and it also give a strong powerful feeling.

Meeting place:

You may feel strange to the tecture I choose for the meeting place. Actualiy, I think Streve Jobs and Zhang Yin both are busy businessman. The meeting place may be the place for them to leave ther work for while. Therefore, I use this interesting texture to give a relex feeling to them. Additionally, the opening roof is also a chance for them to contact the sunlight directly as they work in the office for long time.

I placed the dinning table at the end of the meeting place for them to appreciate the surrounding things or buidings during dinner.

Zhang Yin's office:

The central part of Zhang Yin's office looks like a stone, but it was broken by surrounding extended building. I would like to express the aggressive power of Zhang Yin who would like to become the first in the factory. The texture of the extended part enhance the "rapid development" feeling. Furthermore, the windows are passing through so that you can look through the office. It means the "transperancy of business".

The internal area, I used the black colour as background with the wjhite lines which looks like Zhang's mind map for how to develop her business. In addition, I use the black transperent glass for the groud floor so that the elevator and the office seems flowing in middle air. Although I usded the black colour as background, you do not need to worry about the interior's light because there are lights from windows in extended parts in different directions.

Lastly, I think even how beautiful for the building, we cannot ignore the scale for human. The following pictures will show you the scale realationship between the building and haman.
